Diabetes and metabolic health

Metabolic syndrome comprises a number of disorders that together increase the risk of cardiovascular disease and associated diabetes. Our main research thrust is insulin resistance and the interface between polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), impaired glucose tolerance and type 2 diabetes, and their relationship to metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular risk factors.

Specific projects include

  • Bioenergetics of human stem cells
  • Cardiovascular risk indices in polycystic ovary syndrome and in type 2 diabetes
  • Endocrine disruptor molecules and their effect on obesity
  • Functional foods in health and in disease modification
  • Metabolic activity of early human embryos
  • Pathophysiology of store operated calcium channels

These research themes are described in further detail on the individual investigators web pages.
